Day 5: Shopping at Bridgend and relaxing at Roath Park

March 2nd, Monday.

The kids woke early this morning. We were supposed to drive to Bath for a day trip, but weather forecast showed sunny weather in Cardiff today, and even better weather in Bath the next day. So we changed plan. We decided to swap the two days' itineraries and go for shopping at the factory outlets in Bridgend first.

So after the kids had their breakfast of soda bread (yeast free) and ham and fresh cherries, we dropped Kevin at his hospital and drove to Bridgend which is half an hour drive from Cardiff. We arrived there 10 minutes before the shops were due to open at 10am, so we hanged around.

Started at NEXT, which is one of the good old brands that I used to buy during student days. Got some long sleeve shirts that comes with ties and a pair of jeans for William, real man ties for hubby, shower gel, and then moved on to other shops. Got some chocolate and tea powder at Whittards, and also picked some socks for Victoria at M&S. Bought myself a pair of suede leather shoes for only 8pounds because my sneakers decided to open up it's crocodile mouth, lol!

Popped into many other shops like Christy's for bedlinen, Nike, GAP (bought Vic a very cheap jeans capris at less than 8pounds) etc but some of the things were not very cheap because their winter sale is just over.

The kids snacked on sausages (bought from a cart) and a cream puff (because we wanted to use the table and chairs at a cafe).Even if it's just shops, they loved walking in and out shops and running around outside. The place was not crowded, thank God.

We moved on for lunch at Ichiban which is a japanese restaurant run by one of Ivy's friends (again!) and whilst on the way there, William slept in the car. We carried him in his carseat straight into the restaurant and had our lunch there. I ordered gomoku gohan which is seafood fried rice (with mussels, prawns, scallops - all my favourite) and hubby had what Ivy ordered, which is a bowl of mostly sashimi and some steamed stuff and rice. Vic ordered the usual, her favourite unagi don.

We also had soft shell crab sushi and because the people there knows Ivy so well, we got bigger portions than normally served, and also complimentary fried salmon in pickle (that's super yummy!). We even go 20% discount off the bill!

Throughout lunch, which lasted till 230pm which is the time the restaurant had to close, William slept through. He only woke when we arrived Roath Park.

Roath Park is very huge. We drove around a bit looking for the lake with the ducks and swans and finally found it. There is a gorgeous lighthouse at the beginning of the lake that welcomes all visitors, and my my my, soooo many ducks and elegant swans and seagull and pigeons. I saw many mommies bringing their kids and babies out for a walk as the weather was simply beautiful with the sunshine out.

Naturally Vic and Will were excited to feed the birds. But we told Vic to wait till William finished his late lunch first, as we had limited buns with us (courtesy of the kids' snack in the morning). Whilst waiting, Vic wanted to pee and because it was quite a walk to the toilet, when we finally reached it, she wet her pants and trousers some part. Oh, and by the way, here in the UK, pants refer to underwear. So we have been kindly warned to use this word correctly in the UK. : )

I didn't bring extra pants in the bag, so poor Vic had to let her trousers dry in the weather. But her busyness with the birds soon had her forgotten all about the discomfort of her wet trousers.

William wasn't afraid of the swans. In fact, one got so near to him when the kids started to feed them. They were all coming at us. When William was holding out the bread and just before he could throw it at the swans to eat, the swan in front of him just reached out, unshy, and took the bread from his hand and in the process, had William little fingers in its mouth. I was shocked. William too. But he didn't cry, but that deterred him from feeding the birds anymore. He just watched, and prefered to be carried.

Vic, on the other hand was busy throwing small pieces of bun at the birds that kept coming nearer and nearer. Ivy had to protect her, and shoo the swans away. It was so funny, especially when Ivy said, "Shoo shoo!! Go away. I will shoot you if I have to!" I just kept laughing and laughing.

We spent a good 2 hours at Roath Park, I think. After we ran out of food for the birds, they naturally moved on. William and Vic ran and walked most of the way, while Vic and us tried to NOT step on landmines left behind by the birds, William happily ran on. Occassionally he drifted too near to the muddy area or the lake and we had to set him back on path.

Little buds have started to sprout under some trees but hardly any flowers yet. Probably another month's time but we won't be here to see them. : ( It's ok, I still love you, UK, whether flower or not.

The kids were tired, but very contented. Me too. I enjoyed myself so much at the park I wish I can feed the swans and ducks everyday, haha.

Dinner was special udon mee, homecooked by Ivy again. This time, with chicken broth soup and simmered chicken leg. Total yummilicious! The kids finished their bowl of noodles and even licked the last drop of soup off! Ivy is a great cook. I am now wondering if William will want to eat his boring salmon porridge back home again or not.

Pictures from Day 4: Cardiff and Caerphilly Castle

The kids are always excited to go out in the mornings. Getting Vic to brush her teeth is no problem at all too. Here, William looks like a young little rapper and is checking out his outfit before going out

Day 4: Cardiff and Caerphilly Castle

Feb 28th, Sunday.

This morning the kids woke early at 7am-ish. We bathed them, and they had soda bread with turkey ham breakfast. After that, Kevin drove us out to Caerphilly Castle which is about half an hour journey from where we stayed in St Mellons Cardiff.

The weather was a little wet when we arrived, but Mr Sunshine came out shortly after. The castle is huge, not very furnished except for the dining hallf (I think). The kids enjoyed running around.

At 1pm, we had lunch at Happy Gathering in Cardiff, which is a Hong Kong Chinese restaurant, also belonging to one of Ivy's friends. We celebrated (in a way) Chap Goh Mei there with a special dish Ivy pre-ordered, called the "Poon Choy", translated literally to mean "basin vege".

The dish comes in a 1foot wide metal dish over a fire, and consist of all the good stuff like fatt choy, duck, steam chicken (which is the smoothest one can get), three-layer pork that melts in your mouth, oysters, scallops, radish, mushrooms and prawn. I hope I didn't leave any ingredient out. It was very filling and very delicious.

There were 5 adults and 2 kids, and we couldn't finish even the dish. We ordered two bowls of white rice and the kids had fried rice with chicken bits and their favourite BBQ pork chee cheong fun.

After lunch, we came home to put the kids to sleep. We are determined to normalise their sleeping hours and to end their jetlag. At 4pm, both kids slept after much protest from William. Phew!

With the kids asleep, Ivy and us had some time to chat and rest. I put up some pictures on the blog and then Ivy and me took a short 15minutes walk out to the lake near her house. It's actually a very lovely lake during summertime, according to Ivy where people would camp there and have BBQs and there would be ducks and dogs swimming in the lake. But when we were there, obviously it's still very cold, the lake was desserted and just not the right timing.

At night, Ivy cooked us a very very yummy home cooked pan mee. I tell ya, there is no pan mee as nice and great as Ivy's. I'm saying this deep from my heart, and my hubby agrees with me.

Unfortunately I cannot tapau her pan mee back for my in laws to eat as they are pan mee fans, but Ivy has kindly let me in on the ingredients and secret of her pan mee. I don't know if I can replicate her recipe with such great taste, but I will try. She even made a separate condiments for Vic ie minched pork with garlic instead of the mushrooms and prawn.

The kids loved her pan mee and William had three helpings, whilst Victoria had two. Hubby had two big bowls whilst I could only managed one.

After dinner, we rested and the kids slept early at 10pm. The next day we plan to go to Bath.

Oh, and by the way, today is our 6th wedding anniversary. I can't ask for a better way to celebrate our love than spending this special day with the special man in my life, and our two beautiful kids and good friends, in the country that we first met and fell in love. I love you, hon and looking to many many more anniversaries with you.

So now comes the big question. Should we have baby no.3? Haha... I don't know.

Day 3: London to Cardiff

Feb 27th, Saturday.

Today is our last day at London before moving on to visit our friends at Cardiff. Ivy has kindly booked us coach tickets much earlier from Victoria Coach Station to Cardiff.

We had our breakfast at The Regency Club on the 8th floor as usual. The food selections were the same but we are not complaining. Totally grateful for such a convenient luxury and savings, haha.

In the morning we were more busy. Packed most of our things because we planned to go to Portobello Market as it is one of the popular place on a Saturday and I was excited to get all sorts of bargains. We rushed abit as we were behind time with the packing and bathing the kids.

When we got to the Marble Arch tube station which is the nearest to the hotel, we again carried William in his stroller (here in UK they call it buggy) down two flight of stairs, and a long escalator only to realise that the train was not going to Notting Hill Gate that weekend. So we had to go all the way up again, claim back our money and take the Big Bus to Notting Hill Gate.

Weather was bad. Gloomy, and drizzling. We walked to Portobello Market together with many other people, and off and on it rained. Not the heavy cats and dogs kinda rain like what we have in Malaysia but we still had to open up the two umbrellas to shield the kids while quickly checking out some stalls.

I bought only 3 little souvenirs, a tomato-vege-sausage stew and a tee-shirt. We didn't get to see much as the weather was not favourable and time was not on our side.

We rushed back to the hotel with the bus and on the short walk back to the hotel, dropped into Sainsbury to buy ready-made lunch boxes. Coincidently, Vic and I saw this pack of Irish brown soda bread that her allergist doctor from Tangkak has mentioned to us. This is a special organic bread that is made yeast-free. We bought one loaf at 1.49pounds (only!).

The hired car came on time to pick us at 1pm, and we arrived Victoria Coach Station in good time. The hired car dropped us off near the entrance and we struggled a bit with the luggages for a short distance. Vic helped us with the push trolley, whilst I pushed William on his stroller with a backpack and also pushed his carseat with the harversack. Daddy pulled two hardcase luggages and carried his laptop bag and a backpack on his back.

Victoria Coach Station is a pretty small place, I'd say. The kids didn't have a proper lunch as the food from the lunch boxes were not the tastiest. Thank God for bananas.

When we got into the coach, I placed the laugai William in his car seat. Initially he protested but we had no choice because this is a strict law in UK that toddlers must sit in car seats and children in booster seats. Finally he gave in. I pretended to sleep, and it worked, he fell asleep.

We arrived Cardiff 530pm. Kevin, Ivy's hubby, came to pick us and help us with the luggages. We went home to rest for a while, before proceeding for dinner at a Korean restaurant nearby, which happens to belong to one of Ivy and Kevin's good friends. So although the restaurant was pretty pack, we got our food quick fast.

The kids ate glass noodle with beef for dinner. For the first time, they refused rice because they love the noodle so much.

Ivy and Kevin has kindly gave up with their masterbedroom for me and William to sleep in, and Victoria and Daddy takes the other room. Their house is very warm, cosy and extremely clean. Ivy make sures that she kills every bacteria that attempts to live in her house, haha.

That night, William woke two times crying very loudly. I think he's just not used to the new environment yet but now (as I type this), he's very very at home. The two kids have warmed up to both Ivy and Kevin, and William is very attached to Kevin.
