Can I be her friend?

Oh dear oh dear oh dear!

Just during lunch at the church cafeteria today, a young man who's a trainee at the "special needs" church training centre approached me, asking me if I would allow him to be friends with my girl. I thought it weird, and I've seen him around before (but never talked) so I politely told him she's very shy (which is true). Besides I really didn't want to appear rude as he asked me in public and not to humiliate him because he's "different".

After lunch, he saw Vic running around with William and then he commented that she likes to run. I was like, yea... and then he asked me if I'd allow her to follow him out when he gets to know her, and he has a swimming pool in his house so she can go swimming with him!!!

OM goodness!!! Inside me, I'm ringing red alert red alert, weirdo on the prawl! Quickly I told him, but... she's very shy she probably wouldn't want to as she doesn't know him, etc and then moved along.

All these while, Vic was not with me. Thank God.

Back at home, I asked Vic if she's follow any stranger, uncle or aunty, go swimming or shopping or any sort of activity, and she affirmatively answered, "No." We've had this chat before, not to talk or follow strangers, and it's good we have stories about big bad wolves going in disguise (eg, The Wolf & The Seven Young Kids) and I reiterated to her again that bad people can disguise to be friendly, kind uncle/aunty. NEVER NEVER NEVER talk, accept things, or follow them!!!

So, the next time he comes up to me, I will just tell him nicely that we are not interested and whether or not that hurts his feeling because he's "different", I think this is the right thing to do.

Parents, never let your kids out of your sight, even in compounds or places familiar to you/them.

0.o''' Creepy is the only word that came to my mind when I read this. I don't mind Maine to mix around with even the most 'different' kind but this is a bit too... I donno... But I will definitely tell him NO!

Yeah...agree with rachel to alert the church. It is definitely a scary sign that this guy may have 'not-so-good' intentions.
I always drill ryan never to follow anyone or talk to anyone except our family. Not even friends. And if anyone lures with anything like sweets or drinks, say no thank you and run to teacher or me.
So scary nowadays yah?? How to protect our children all the time??

Would it look like I'm prejudice or being too harsh? We don't eat there all the time, but if he comes out again and makes any more attempts, then I will inform the church authorities. However, I do feel bad if he's just sincere, coz you know they are different.

Well, we meet all kinds of people in all kinds of venues, so don't fret, the basic rule is no no to any stanger even he she is so differnet or not.

next time if this happens, don't talk ,just gesture in body language like waving your hands singalling no no, and just keep quiet,,,my opinion lah, i find the useful,,, becuase the more you talk ,the more room is open for conversation, right.

have a great weekend and god bless

Hi Irene,
I happened to stumble upon your blog when i googled XXX sometime ago. My daughter goes to XXX as well and this guy has approached me with the same questions too. Like you, I tried to be nice and non-prejudiced but I do feel slightly uncomfortable with the situation. He tends to ask the same thing( about being friends wth my daughter n going swimming together) over and over. I know another mum who's also had the same experience. Considering he is with the special needs program, I hope his gesture is sincere and innocent but still, I've been trying to be more cautious and not encourage him by being too friendly.

Btw, your kids are lovely and a joy to read about :) "

OMGosh!! scary indeed. I have such a person in my parents church in Ipoh. And my son was too friendly go and shake hands and talk to this uncle....

But all within my sight. In the end, kungkung has to go resuce him from the clutches of this uncle.
